Communication is one of the most important parts of a successful relationship.
However, that doesn’t make it one of the easiest parts.
Maybe you argue with your partner more than you’d like. Maybe you feel disconnected. Or, maybe your relationship is good, but you know it could be stronger if you could both learn how to communicate better with each other.
While you might think your communication skills simply need work, you can go beyond that by using EFT techniques to reach for your partner more often, and to ensure you’re emotionally available and accessible to them when they do the same to you.
With that in mind, let’s look at some ways couples can learn to communicate better.
Slow Down Your Interactions
There’s no denying we live in a fast-paced society.
People are busier than ever, and more often than not, we want instant gratification for just about everything.
However, when it comes to communication, that isn’t always the best way to go.
The next time you’re having a conversation with your partner, make a point to not only be an active listener but to take the time to let what they’re saying sink in. Take a deep breath and give yourself 5-10 seconds before responding.
If you need help reminding yourself to slow down, attach a physical action to your conversations. Consider holding hands with your partner as a reminder to take things slowly. It’ll help to build a stronger connection than you might think!
Listen to Your Signals
Your body is constantly sending you internal signals. You just have to be willing to listen and accept them.
If something feels off in the way you’re communicating, pay attention to any of these signals. Maybe you’ll feel a sudden “shock” race throughout your system. Or, it might be a flutter in your chest or stomach.
Don’t ignore these signals! Your mind and body are working together to tell you something about the conversation at hand. As you pay attention and adjust your communicative efforts, you’ll become more acutely aware of your body’s signals and what they mean.
Remember You’re On the Same Team
When you’re struggling to communicate, it’s easy to put up “walls” and block out any other perspective but your own.
That’s why it’s so important to remember that you and your partner are on the same team.
You might do things differently. Maybe you have different methods or perspectives or opinions. But, at the end of the day, you likely have the same goals or want the same outcomes. It can be a tough pill to swallow when you have to humble yourself and realize your way of doing things isn’t the only way.
However, it’s essential for effective communication. It will help you feel more connected with your partner and improve both your intimacy and communication skills.
Think About How You See Each Other
Body language is an extremely important factor when it comes to effective communication. Maybe you unknowingly roll your eyes when you don’t agree with your partner. Maybe they cross their arms in front of their chest, making you feel like you can’t speak freely.
Pay attention to your body language by thinking about how your partner sees you. What do they see when you’re talking to each other—especially when you’re arguing? When you start to look at yourself from their perspective, it’s easier to make better body language choices.
Finally, don’t be afraid to consider therapy, either as an individual or a couple. These techniques are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to improving communication.
